August is always an exciting month as the pre trainers increase their work and start schooling in readiness for soft ground in the autumn.
With monsoon rain over the past week we have been able to both gallop and school on the grass, a good few weeks earlier than normal. Many of the horses are quite far forward and we should have a few new start runners at Perth and Cartmel over the next few weeks.
Six horses worked on the grass last Tuesday; there is a video on the home page and more on the Facebook page, Lucinda Russell Racing. Signifiant, Fyfin Patsy, Thepensionfund, Effet Special, Order Of Thistle and Exchequer all worked over a mile and six furlongs.
This morning we schooled the first four of those, and they were joined by Pinspot, Izzy's Champion, Lucky Flight and Last King Of Wales, jumping both hurdles and fences.
There was more jumping in the school at Arlary as Gregor started teaching Exchequer to jump; his was an easy task as the three year old grey loved the challenge and was foot perfect. With the help of experienced eventers and our team of jockeys who all ride with sense and bravery we have an ideal team to teach our horses well.
Gregor has also been breaking in a couple of horses for us when Stephen is short of time. The French two year olds, Netywell and Hector Master have both been broken by him and can jump and canter on their own. Gregor is about to break another for us; recent acquisition by Sholokov who is three years old and looks a well balanced strong type.
The majority of the horses who came in during July are cantering away; pictured is Mint Gold leading Rapid Raider, Speak Of the Devil, Vengeur De Guye, Exit To Where and OrionInverness. Many are still carrying condition but that will be turned into muscle as the speed of their work increases.
The shares in Well Above Par have been sold; we have three more horses with shares available please see the horses for sale page.
We also have news of a public open day for charity on Saturday 31st August; full details tomorrow.
